Built in 1927/28 by Bethlehem Steel, Gold Dredge #8 was a "gold factory". It was used to scoop up the sand and gravel from the river, remove the gold and then spit the "tailings" out the back. Rigs like this could completely change the flow of a river due to the deposit of the tailings.
